On September 3rd, a photo popped up on my Facebook feed, “I shouted is that Michelle Obama with my high school teachers?” Fashion Design students from the High School of Fashion Industries (also my former high school) met with First Lady Michelle Obama and Vouge Editor in Chief Anna Wintour on May 5th at the MET Costume Institute for a ribbon cutting ceremony. Among the honored  attendees included Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, Donatella Versace and more. Mrs. Obama even shook each students hand and signed a copy of Vouge according to the school’s website. The school attracts many influential individuals. In 2001, my junior year, Former President Bill Clinton address students after the September 11th attacks. Famed designer Kenneth Cole met with students in the Adopt-A-Student Program in 2002. Other visitors include, Steve Madden, Anna Sui, Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee Simmons.

Designer Spotlight on: The Bow Tie Kids an emerging brand based in Miami

20140415-194659.jpg

The Bowtie Kids Clothing line was developed in 2013 by Miami Native Kiwani Tapper. She always  had a passion for art and fashion since she was a child. As a teen, she attended Felix Varela High School and studied Graphic Arts. After graduating college with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kiwani began a career as a Speech Therapist and worked with children living in Miami-Dade county some who had special needs. She never forgot her love for fashion and often thought of how she could be creative and still work with children.

I had a dream one night, a vision of my clothing line! I woke up and started drawing and developing an apparel line. This has never happened to me before, waking up from a dream and then drawing

The very next day, Kiwani had her preliminary sketches vectorized and printed on on a few t-shirts. She set-up a company website and with in 10 minutes sold her very 1st t-shirt. The clothing line has since gone through various phases of development over the past year. Featuring unique T-shirts with hand made 3 dimensional bows, accessories and onesies, all of the artwork is original and hand drawn by Kiwani. Even the brand logo is drawn by the owner. She recently added bow tie studded earring featuring the brand logo.

Review of the sixth season of petite PARADE

20140313-205445.jpgI was so excited to attend petite Parade this year and view the Fall/Winter Collections from the latest children’s designers. This year he bi-annual runway show was held in Chelsea (a few blocks from wear I attended high school). Amber Sabathia debuted her Major League Baseball sportswear line CCandy, named after her husband New York Yankee baller CC Sabathia. The ready to wear line featured brightly colored hoodies, tees and sweatpants embellished with patterned New York Yankee logos. My fave was the giraffe print hoodie. Many of the girls sported bright tee shirts over fluffy tutu’s and leggings.

The next show to rock the runway was IMOGA, a west coast brand that featured soft and whimsical clothing for girls. The 2014 fall and winter collection was composed of brocade dresses, faux fur vests or collars. The color palette was rich shades of deep shades of navy, teal and plum. The Alivia Simone show was up beat, and my son Mj couldn’t  help but jump out of his seat and dance in the aisle as the little models strutted down the runway to Pharrell’s hit “Happy”. The show opened with brocade holiday dresses in soft pastel’s that you usually don’t see in a winter collection. 8 year old  celebrity model, Chance Combs, (daughter of Sara Chapman and Sean Diddy Combs) graced the runway to the delight of the crowd.

The evening shows were extremely exciting because pint-size celebrity look a likes from Toddlewood were in attendance. In the front row you could spot a mini Pharrell rocking the infamous Vivienne Westwood hat and a super cute Lupita Nyong’o.  The little Mischka Aoki models wore distressed black tights and gorgeous dresses.  This collection was all about textures! My fave look was a hot pink feathered dress with a hot pink satin peplum. Embroidered wool blazers adorned with feathers and Swarovski crystals. Tiny celebs like Suri Cruise often don these designs. The final runway show was  Bonnie Young one of my favorite clothing lines. (Oh how I wish I had a daughter to dress up!) The collection included wool plaid skirts, jackets and kilts for boys. The styling was quite unique, the highlight was a cute boy in a grey plaid kilt, over black pants topped with a hexagon satin blazer. The models looked very chic in soft greys, silver and black textured ensembles. In between shows, guest were treated to yummy cupcakes from Baked by Melissa, fresh food from Pressed Tea and even a cool art workshop by Milk POP.

Each guest was treated to gift bags, which Amber personally stuffed with Rawling baseballs and tees.

Kids Food Festival 2014 NYC

The Kids Food Festival is a free two day event that celebrates healthy eating and teaches families about the benefits of an active lifestyle. I attended the event with my 5 year old MJ and my husband at Bryant Park. There was plenty of activities such as the balanced plated scavenger hunt, dance parties with Radio Disney, football toss with the NFL’s Play 360 and a craft station where kids got to decorate lunch boxes, chef hats and aprons. There were over 100 vendors handing out tasty treats to sample, like natural mint hot coca, Banana Cream of Wheat, and Dalia’s vegan pizza. I enjoyed Tessemae’s honey mustard sauce I ended up buying 3 bottles! Guest were able to purchase tickets for cooking classes that took place in the James Beard Foundation Future Foodies Pavillion with Carlo’s Bakery, and famous chefs like Carla Hall, Candice Kumai and Richie Brandenburg. Despite the frigid temps we stayed warm by dancing with Pop Fit Kids who lead an amazing fitness workshop on the main stage. Our friends Tristin and Tyler also led a breakfast cooking class and the audience was treated to a tasting. It was a fun family event and I look forward to attending the next Festival! We had a super time at Super Fun Saturday in Harlem!

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

I waited nearly a month to attend Super Fun Saturday, thank god it did not snow this past weekend! This event, sub titled, Exposing the Power of Play, drew a major crowd to The Children’s Aid Society in Harlem. The gymnasium was transformed into an exciting event space with over 20 vendors and craft stations. Lambert Treasure Events outfitted the environment with amazing bright balloon sculptures, some in the shape of life sized children that took my breath away and left my 5 year old stunned! MJ began taking of his shoes, eager to play in the bounce house with other kiddos. I got to meet many designers and tiny fashionistas and watch many of the children participate in the Yuuniq candles. Yay9 or jewelry making workshops. Parent were treated to, make up demonstrations manicures, shopping, and wine tasting by Belaire Rose.

The 56th annual Grammy Awards took place at the famed Staples Center In Los Angeles last night. Here is a recap of what the youngest stars wore!

My fave look of the night Madonna and her 8 year old son David Banda in matching black Ralph Lauren Tuxedos and hats.

Shake It Up! Star 17 year old Zendaya Coleman dons a sheer black blouse with a high split bright blue skirt by Emanuel Ungaro.

Teen singer and Grammy Winner for Best Pop Solo Performance Lorde 17 sang her hit song “Royal” wearing a white sleeveless blouse and wide legged black pants. The most astonishing part of the outfit her dark dipped fingernails! This nail art was spotted at Mara Hoffman’s A/W 2012 show.
