It’s Kids Fashion week in NYC and there are so many events to cover, Petite Parade, Playtime NY, and the ENK tradeshow. I woke up early got my 4 year old dressed and we decided to make our first stop the Isossy Children preview in Park slope at Hotel Le Bleu. I was excited to see their line after viewing the website and parents raving about their dresses at last night Kid’s Spring Fashion Twitter Party.
My son and I were greeted at the rooftop lounge by Denise and designer Amanda Rabor who launched the label in 2010. Both ladies grew up in Brooklyn and have lived in London, England. Isossy Children incorporates African, Asian and Western textiles to create a globally inspirational fashion line line for kids and tweens.
The website describes the company’s mission :The inspiration is transcending cultural barriers and opening it up for all children. Amanda believes that it is empowering for children to see African prints in their day-to-day expression and in turn it promotes inclusion and understanding.
Denise went through the clothing racks and describe each wonderfully crafted garment. I was impressed by the high level of craftsman ship and detail ( I was a bridal seamstress at one point so I know quality tailoring). A majority of the dresses had smocking or pleats on the front which is perfect for a robust or slender girl. The dresses, playsuits and suits were easy to get into and looked luxurious. The color and fabric combinations were unique for children’s clothing, turquoise with navy or cranberry and fuchsia. I adored the “Glitter Dress” a fully lined flat sequin frock with mustard and navy African print. I asked if the fabrics were treated since most wax prints are very stiff, Denise said they are just lucky!
Each boys suit was fully lined in an bold fabric. There was always an element of surprise such as peek-a boo pocket fabric, patterned bias trimming or bold fabric underneath the suit collars. Amanda even let MJ try on a bold orange suit jacket and we had an impromptu photoshoot. For tweens the sequin Tomboy jacket and Vivienne skirt (I call it the alternative tutu) are perfect for girls who are fashion forward.
