Fresh Kid Nation was pleased to be an attendee of the AmericasMart Atlanta Children’s World Festivities from April 11-14th, 2013. Children’s World started out as a slight portion of the epic Fashion Mart and now spans an entire floor of Designers categorized as Temporaries or Permanent Showroom Designers. We were able to meet-n-greet with tons of fledglings; as well as some very established and prominent brands in the childrenswear and maternity wear industry.
Ima Uko from Los Angeles, California is the owner of Hooked by Ima which features chic handmade crochet items for kids and adults. She provided Fresh Kid Nation an exclusive interview about her brand and design inspiration!
I started out designing for children after having been invited to so many baby showers and seeing the lack of new, fresh, gift ideas that not only mommy would enjoy but the child as well. While I have always been creative and an entrepreneur at heart, I decided to tap into the children’s market by using the traditional art form of crochet and giving it a trendy feel by using bright colors and modern patterns.
Hooked by Ima is different because everything is handmade, unique and one-of-a kind. I use soft and quality yarns, everything is created in a smoke-free and pet-free environment and its not your typical “grandma’s crochet”! It’s not everyday that you can go to a major retailer and purchase a handmade blanket or pair of booties th
at will last for many years to come and serve as a keepsake. Because of the cool colors and fun designs, Hooked by Ima has become a favorite amongst many children and their parents. Hooked by Ima has amazing clientele that includes some of today’s top celebrities and their children. Once you’ve been “Hooked”, you’ll come back again!
Golden magazine partnered with Shades of a Cure on April 13th to host a kids charity fashion show at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center. The sold out crowd was treated to a creative workshop by milkPOP Shop, performances by talented kids and haute looks from the hippest children’s wear designers. 11 year old Devyn Tyson, was the MC and I was amazed by her talent( and chic haircut) as she told the excited crowd “Sit back and relax because you are golden!”

Swag Life clothing was created by 13 year old designer Lloyd with the help of Scoop. Domonique from Mi Bella Vita and of Ka’ress My Lyfe Clothing sisters from Ohio, featured custom t shirts and jackets for boys and girls. They guarantee that 20% of all proceeds go towards the Lupus Foundation. Local Boutiques Polka Dots and Rockets located at 2216 Fulton st in Brooklyn as well as You Me and Dupri hosted pop up sales for guests.

A couple of days ago I took part in a fashion show for Global Kids Fashion Week. The event was the first of its kind in London and I got to walk the walk, on the catwalk, WOW!
I felt very lucky when Amanda Rabour, Children’s wear designer and owner of Issosy Children asked me if I would like to model a suit from the Isossy Children’s SS13 collection. I had always wanted to try modelling as I had really enjoyed taking part in a few photo shoots for another brand, so here was my chance to experience catwalk…….….’All eyes on me’!
Even though inside I was nervous, out-side I had to show I was as cool as a cucumber! Walking down the catwalk was FAB!
I wore the Omo Boys Suit from Isossy Children’s SS13 collection. Amanda uses African and Asian prints in her work. I have always like the clothing Amanda designs, as they are different from any thing else I have seen, colourful and fun.
After all of the excitement of the show, there was an After Party for everyone to enjoy. The after party was fantastic! I met some great people, had fun and ate lots of Popcorn & Candy Floss!!!

I felt very lucky last week to have been asked by Shauna from Fresh Kid Nation to report back to her on the very
first Global Kids Fashion Week – Britain’s first designer fashion week especially for children.Having worked in children’s fashion for the last nine years I have felt there has been a great need of such a platform. With the increase in the desire for parents to find clothing that is of great design, made from good quality fabrics and that compliments the child’s personality, there has been an increase in the number of independent children’s wear label’s designed here in the UK. By having GKFW in London this would hopefully cast a light on the children’s wear market here in the UK and highlight the emerging talent.
DAY ONE of the Fashion show featured a selection of clothing from Autumn/Winter 2013 Collections. Designers including Kenzo, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Paul Smith Junior, Chloe, Missoni, Junior Gaultier, Fendi, Scotch R’belle and Scotch Shrunk (one of my favorite brands for my boys and they love it too!) and many more.
As I approached the Freemasons Building in Covent Garden, where the first ever runway show in the UK was going to take place, photographers were taking pictures of mini fashionista’s as they arrived with their parents.
Once in the venue, I guess the ‘Stage’ was set just like most fashion shows, with its long runway and cameras on stands waiting for their owners to snap the hottest show in town!
There was such excitement in the hall as fashion pundits, journalists, yummy mummies and celebrities arrived (The gorgeous Jodie & Jemma Kid, Portia Freeman to name but a few!). Continue reading
