ideacircus is a new apparel & home textile line started by, self taught artist Gordon Ross. The brand features bright and bold graphics reminiscent of 60’s pop art designs. ideacircus is unique because it is wearable art! Gordon has designed textiles, furniture, china, magazines, and made even made short films.

I live in Cape Town, South Africa, but I’m originally from London and have lived in New York, Tennessee, and Scotland.

 Why did you choose to design for children?

I’m an artist and designer whose work is bold and colourful, and seems to appeal to kids. I have just started my kids clothing line with prints developed from my paintings and drawings. It’s fun to see someone wearing some of my art, and they seem to enjoy it to. Some of my designs look like illustrations from children’s books, and some are more abstract. I like producing different things all the time, and trying out new styles and techniques. My fashion line is for kids, and men, and women. I just launched the label in May 2018. I’ve already had orders from South Africa, The United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Previously I’ve designed interiors, furniture, home products, magazine layouts, and made short films.

 How is your label different from the other children’s brand already on the market?

 My brand is the only one to show my artwork, so it is unique in the respect. Also my bold designs, bright colours, and graphic lines do have quite a distinctive look.

Where do you get your ideas from and what or who inspires you as a designer?

I spend a lot of time looking at Pop art, vintage posters, 1960’s fashion and art, book illustrations, old movie and TV clips from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I get inspiration from all of these. I am self taught as a artist & designer and didn’t study art or fashion at college, I’ve just always been looking at art books and going to exhibitions, and looking at design and fashion magazines. I’ve always drawn and kept journals since the 1970’s. (I’m older than I look!)

 What advice do you have for kids who want to design?

 Design whatever it is you are interested in, be it clothing, buildings, posters, cars, puppets, models, paintings, drawing, and don’t limit yourself, try you new things,  all you need is some paper and pens and an idea or two. 
I would also say, get a notebook or sketchbook to draw and write down your ideas, dreams, wishes, interesting things you have seen or heard about. You can also use it as a scrapbook of interesting ideas, pictures, magazine clippings, colourful packaging, pieces of fabric, old stamps,etc. I always have a sketch book for writing and drawing, and I’ve got them going all the way back to the 1970’s when I was a teenager!
Go and look at books on art and design at their school library or public library, or look online, there is so much cool design stuff out there, fashion, furniture, interiors, cars, product design. You can go in so many directions in design. I have worked in interior design and designed furniture, lighting, dishes, bedding, I’ve designed magazine layouts and posters, and done set design for theater. Design is great thing for kids to be interested in, and it can lead to a lot of interesting careers too!

 

Has your clothing been featured in any fashion shows or events, trade shows?
My printed textile designs have been used by two women’s wear companies in South Africa, Ruff Tung (day/evening/beach) and Beach Cult (swimwear)
 Johannesburg Pan-African Fashion Week 2016 of the Ruff Tung fashion show, featuring my printed textile designs for dresses, wraps, vests (waistcoats), and trousers. The fashion show was broadcast on Fashion One Television to over 40 countries. Ruff Tung also showed these clothes at the PURE Fashion trade fair in London. Beach Cult showed my prints on their bikinis at Premier Vision fashion trade fair in Paris in 2016. My textile designs have been in most of the fashion magazines in South Africa, Glamour, Essentials, Woman and Home, and the Sunday Times.
