Igloo Island a unique clothing brand for girls!

FKN designer spotlight is on Sandra Stollar and her New York City based company Igloo Island.  Not your usual pink and glittery girls fashion, they create accessories, t shirts,and  denim. Ambition is the  new active wear and sportswear line for Igloo Island. Sandra had a hand developing the company from her own daughters! They even helped name the company based on their dual heritage;Igloo for their dad’s Russian heritage and Island for Sandra’s Jamaican roots.

Sandra shares her design inspiration and what makes Igloo Island different from other children’s’ clothing companies:
Our label is different because we play with color and style in a different way that appeals to today’s tweens and their parents. We think it is important for kids to be kids. My daughters – Brittany, 17, and Cailin, 13 – help with our designs, and Cailin wears prototypes to school and the gym so she can receive feedback from her friends. Because of their active input, we say Igloo Island styles are “Designed by kids for kids.” All our items are fun, fashionable and age-appropriate. We design clothing that girls love to wear and mothers like to buy.
I don’t get inspiration from any one designer; I look for elements from a variety of designers that bring out the best in our clothing and the girls who wear them. I look for inspiration in colors and fabrics. I am inspired by kids – how they dress, how they play, and how they socialize. Every girl is different. They have different personalities and our clothing lets each child confidently promote their individuality.
My daughters inspire and encourage me. My daughter Brittany (who was 13 at the time) couldn’t find anything she liked and that was age-appropriate. She turned to me and said, “Mom, you work in the fashion industry. Why don’t you start your own business and design clothes for us.”  I said I would if she helped me. She agreed and Igloo Island was born. Last year her younger sister helped to create Ambition Activewear, which was inspired by Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. Ambition’s motto, “Start Strong. End Strong.” exemplifies what we are trying to achieve – self-confident, active girls who are proud of themselves are active participants.
Currently Igloo Island can be found in boutiques and specialty stores, and coming soon to a department store near you.
